New clinical practice guideline strengthens older adults’ functional ability and opportunities to influence their daily lives in home care

The Finnish Nursing Research Foundation (Hotus) has published a new national clinical practice guideline emphasizing rehabilitative home care, which can strengthen older adults’ functional ability, participation, and capacity to live independently at home.

The guideline highlights the importance of supporting older adults as active participants in their own care and daily lives.

According to Sinikka Lotvonen from the GeroNursing Centre at the University of Oulu, who served as Chair of the Guideline Development Group, promoting the active role of older adults improves the quality of home care while also offering the potential to reduce costs within health and social care services.

The guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for home care professionals and organizations to support older adults’ autonomy, functional ability, and meaningful engagement in everyday activities while living at home.
