Helse Vest in Norway invests in Medanets after a successful pilot

Senior Advisor Trond Waehle from Helse Vest IKT presented the pilot results at the Medanets User Days 2026. Based on the evaluation, the regional board approved the investment in Medanets for clinical use. Helse Vest is currently planning the rollout of the solution across the region and extending the usage to additional features not included in the pilot.

Medanets was piloted with our partner Mesalvo’s EHR solution, which has been in place at Helse Vest since a decade. The pilot utilized Mesalvo’s HealthCentre Cortex technology with Medanets. The piloted scope included mobile Early Warning Score, vital signs and pain assessment using Observation values, and administration of medications. 150 nurses piloted the features for about six months using iPhones and our Next Level iOS app.

Cooperation between the involved parties ensured smooth progress

“The combination of a brand-new iOS app from Medanets and the first installation for Mesalvo with integration into the app meant that the period leading up to the pilot start was as much a development project as an implementation project”, says Waehle. “However, good cooperation and the willingness of everyone involved to solve problems made the project run smoothly. Close daily contact with Mesalvo and Medanets teams during the first phase of the pilot meant that we were able to quickly correct any bugs that were discovered”, he adds.

Purchase decision was backed with evidence

To summarise the pilot, Waehle’s team prepared an evaluation report based on a quantitative survey. The survey was conducted by Advisor Iljen Rossemyr as part of her master’s thesis in Health Informatics, and was designed according to a theoretical framework, the information systems success model from Delone and McLean. The survey consisted of 31 structured questions, of which respondents were required to answer 28, on a five-point Likert scale in relation to given statements, 1 meaning “strongly disagree” and 5 meaning “strongly agree”. In addition, the team looked at studies and reports from other hospitals regarding Medanets usability and associated benefits, as well as the organisation’s own strategy documents.

The results from the evaluation in Helse Vest are in line with, and partly consistent with, experiences with Medanets from other hospitals in Norway, Sweden, Finland and the UK.  According to the evaluation team, the findings across these contexts support the same interpretation: that point-of-care documentation on a mobile app saves time, improves workflows, enables faster availability of clinical data and supports the decision-making of healthcare personnel.

The evaluation team found that the introduction of the Medanets app corresponds well to the overall strategy of Helse Vest, as it will provide increased point-of-care documentation, strengthened patient safety and more efficient use of healthcare personnel resources.

“This is the first app I have used that actually saves time in my daily work”

The survey results were generally very positive for Medanets. Both system and information quality of the app received good scores from the respondents. For instance, 95% of the respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the app is easy for new users to learn. 84% of them agreed or strongly agreed that the app safeguards and strengthens patient safety, including through ID scanning of patient wristbands.

86% of the respondents agreed or strongly agreed that using Medanets provides more time for patient-centred work. This was highlighted in one of the respondents’ comments: “So far, I have only used Medanets to perform NEWS, and this is the first application I have used that actually saves time in my daily work.”

User satisfaction was generally high, with willingness to extend the usage of the app to additional features and workflows.
