From Tokyo to Oulu — Tokyo Public Health delegation explores innovation at Oulu University Hospital

It is always a pleasure to host international delegations in Oulu and showcase the innovations developed here. This time, a delegation from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Public Health visited us at OYS – Oulu University Hospital on Monday, October 27.

The visit began with an overview of OYS, followed by presentations on Pohde’s innovation activities and the award-winning Hola 5G Oulu project. At OYS TestLab and the Service Design Centre, the guests saw how real-world space modelling is used to plan new functions and ensure smooth workflows.

During the hospital tour, the group explored the Neurocentre and the Operating Department, where they were introduced to the Image-Guided Surgery Unit and a new AI-assisted speech recognition tool currently being tested for structured documentation in the patient information system. They also learned about the Hospital Pharmacy’s Unit Dose dispensing robot, Unto, and the pneumatic tube system used to transport medicines.

The delegation was highly impressed by OYS’s use of cutting-edge technologies and the way both staff and patients are actively involved in planning and testing new solutions. They showed particular interest in the AI-supported documentation of reception conversations and in the Esko patient information system with its mobile applications.
