Health Talks: Brain Imaging for Improved Research and Therapies, online

Welcome to the next event from the Health Talks series – health, life sciences and entrepreneurship talks organised by Aalto University, Health Design, Health Hub Tampere, HealthTurku, HiLIFE, Kuopio Health, OuluHealth, Terkko Health Hub, Upgraded – Health Startup Association of Finland, Laurea Entrepreneurship Society, Metropolia Entrepreneurship Society and Xes Helsinki.

In this Health Talks event, experts in brain imaging and brain therapies discuss new software, AI, and medical device technologies that may come to offer significant value for neuroscience and medical treatments worldwide.

Specifically, the presentations delve in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and related artificial intelligence technologies. Each presentation is directly followed by a Q&A session.

Time: 8 December 2022, 15:00 – 16:20
Place: The webinar will be held via Zoom. A link will be sent after registration.

Participation in this event is free of charge but requires registration.

The event is jointly organized by Aalto University and Kuopio Health, and the speakers hold positions at Aalto and the University of Eastern Finland.

Agenda:

15:00 – Welcome to today’s Health Talks by Aalto and Kuopio Health

15:10 – Dr. Jaakko Paasonen, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio: “Silent and artefact-free magnetic resonance imaging method for behavior-related studies of whole-brain function”

15:30 – Prof. Jussi Tohka, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio: “Machine learning in brain imaging”

15:50 – Dr. Victor Hugo Souza, Aalto University: “Personalized network stimulation: Combining neuroimaging with multi-channel transcranial magnetic stimulation”

16:15 – Closing words

Prof. Hanna Renvall (MD, PhD) from Aalto University and the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) will participate by commentary during Q&A sessions.

Speakers:

Dr. Jaakko Paasonen has over 10 years of experience in the development of fMRI-related techniques, and obtained his PhD in Biomedical Imaging at the University of Eastern Finland in 2017.

Dr. Jussi Tohka is Full Professor of Biomedical Image Analysis and head of the Biomedical Image Analysis Group at the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences of the University of Eastern Finland. His research focuses on developing new methods to analyze imaging data and developing machine learning approaches for predicting the course of brain diseases. He received his PhD in 2003 in Tampere and has worked also at the University of California, Los Angeles, Tampere University of Technology, and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (as CONEX professor). His research includes over 130 full-length articles in refereed journals or conferences and he has supervised nine PhD theses. Several software tools developed by him and his team are in wide use in medical imaging laboratories worldwide.

Dr. Victor Hugo Souza is a Research Fellow at Aalto University in Prof. Risto Ilmoniemi’s group. Dr. Souza develops technologies for personalized brain stimulation with neuroimaging data, including structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging. He has created and validated several human and preclinical multi-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation coils to study network brain functions. His research focuses on understanding the human motor system.

The event will be recorded and later shared publicly.
