Battling pain with Kipuwex’s IoT device for healthcare

The goals of identifying pain and implementing drug-free treatments are rapidly growing in demand in the healthcare sector. Therefore, in an ongoing effort to find the best pain assessment tools, Kipuwex, an Oulu-based health tech start-up, has developed a perfect solution to answer the needs in this field. The company is currently working on an internationally recognised project, inDemand, and strengthening its position by expanding internationally.

According to statistics, between 2000 and 2015, the opioid epidemic claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the USA where opioid overdoses are estimated to have a higher risk of death than car accidents. While opioid addiction is not a new phenomenon in the United States, it is now spreading to Europe, as more and more individuals reach for opioid drugs hoping to relieve pain. Moreover, pain assessment is challenging for patients who are unable to communicate, for example, small children, people with mental disorders, and critically ill patients. Pain management is especially important for premature babies whose central nervous system is yet to develop. That is why finding new pain measurement and treatment methods is becoming more and more urgent. This is exactly where Kipuwex’s solution fits in, as it is able to measure the level of pain accurately. In addition to its IoT device, Kipuwex Ltd contributes to drug-free treatment by developing proper assessment tools in cooperation with pain management professionals at Oulu University Hospital. This joint initiative results from the international project, inDemand, which is an innovative model of co-creating digital health solutions to solve the challenges identified by healthcare organizations with the economic support of public regional funds.

Recently, the company has gained recognition for its innovative technology by being nominated for the Technology Awards 2019, the competition that brings to light the leading companies that have gone above and beyond in researching and producing solutions that help to improve the quality of life on a daily basis.

Kipuwex is headquartered in Oulu but also has a joint venture agreement with Nanjing’s  Mini Silicon Valley (MiNiSV), business partners in Dubai-Pakistan and a newly opened R&D office in Nepal.

The company has also received a Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patent and another one from the patent family is pending.  Kipuwex has received overwhelming interest from the health industry all over the world due to its unique technology/solution. The company is now aiming to deliver the first batch of pain measurement devices to international customers during the first quarter of 2020.
