Optomed’s fundus camera rewarded the AI Use Case of the Year in the healthcare category
Optomed’s AI-powered Aurora AEYE fundus camera was recognised as the AI Use Case of the Year in the healthcare category at the AI Gala on 23 October 2024.
In the healthcare category, the goal was to find an AI innovation that has improved the quality of care, efficiency, or patient quality of life. The jury, led by Risto Siilasmaa, selected the top three candidates in ten different categories from among hundreds of nominees. In addition to Optomed, the top three included CGI, HUS, Planmeca’s AI Head Analysis, and Kustannus Oy Duodecim.
Optomed’s Aurora AEYE is a product that can screen diabetic patients for blinding eye disease (diabetic retinopathy) and was the first handheld camera in the U.S. to receive regulatory approval and a sales permit in May 2024. By integrating AI, the camera enables access to eye screenings and treatment for a much broader patient population, as the screenings can be brought closer to patients, for example, in primary healthcare, home care, or pharmacies.
The AI Gala, organised by AI Finland and its partners, was held for the first time this year. The AI Finland network was established in March 2024 to bring together Finnish companies and other entities interested in artificial intelligence. The network’s goal is to increase the adoption and development of artificial intelligence in Finland.
