Less admin, more care: Tietoevry’s Lifecare Resource Optimization lightens the load for nursing staff in Finland

By providing a single digital view of staff, facilities, and services, Tietoevry Care’s Lifecare Resource Optimization is freeing up valuable time for patient care at Finland’s Seinäjoki Central Hospital.
After a joint specification and development project between the Wellbeing Services County of South Ostrobothnia, Finland, and Tietoevry Care, the Lifecare Resource Optimization solution was implemented in the county’s first outpatient clinics in May 2024.
Previously, resource planning was handled through fragmented systems and spreadsheets. “The goal was to lighten the planning staff’s cognitive load and overall workload by automating operations. Tietoevry Care’s solution was a good fit for this need”, says Marjo Patana, ICT Development Manager at the county. The Lifecare Resource Optimization automates scheduling and provides real-time visibility, replacing time-consuming manual tasks with efficient, centralized coordination.
The development process has involved close collaboration with healthcare professionals, including head nurses and administrative teams, ensuring the solution meets the practical needs of day-to-day clinic management. Key benefits include improved transparency, easier onboarding, and better support for staff who manage multiple clinics.
The implementation included collaboration across clinics with different specialties, from surgery to orthopedics and urology. Tytti Valli, Manager of Social and Health Application Services, emphasizes the broad engagement: “I am very pleased that we managed to engage the head nurses in this project and the overall development effort. The project also included representatives from HR and facility management”.
Head nurse Sami Penttilä notes the time savings: “Previously, weekly resource allocation took several hours, as information had to be extracted from many different systems. Now the entire process takes at most half an hour per outpatient clinic. As we include more professional groups, it will save even more time in the future.” He also highlights the solution’s clarity and ease of use, particularly valuable in multi-clinic management and staff onboarding.
Tietoevry Care continues to enhance the system. “We are exploring how to bring even more intelligence to Lifecare Resource Optimization.”, says Tommi Koistinen, Lead Product Manager at Tietoevry Care. “For example, to improve forecasting, the optimization of automatic allocation, and decision support. The solution can also be integrated with production management applications from other providers. This way, it can truly help counties improve their operations and achieve cost savings”.
Looking ahead, South Ostrobothnia plans to expand the solution to 10 clinics by the end of 2025, including broader professional groups and potentially primary healthcare. The project has already attracted interest from other wellbeing services counties, highlighting its potential to bring significant improvements to healthcare operations across Finland.
