Boldyn Networks and Ascom collaborate to maximise digitalisation at Oulu University Hospital

Boldyn Networks (Boldyn) and Ascom have joined forces to enhance digitalisation at Oulu University Hospital (OYS) by boosting 300 Ascom Myco 4 devices for the use of hospital staff, enabled by Boldyn’s private 5G Standalone(SA) network. This is part of the Hola Oulu project where consortium members Pohde, Oulu University Hospital (OYS), University of Oulu, and WICOAR Technologies Oy are revolutionising patient care by implementing advanced, secure, high-capacity connectivity within the hospital environment.

Ascom, a leading provider of healthcare communication solutions, has proven the effectiveness of their devices in connecting healthcare staff at institutions like Chase Farm Hospital (UK), Paoli-Calmettes Institute (France), and Vaasa Central Hospital (Finland). The Myco 4 devices are professional-grade, 5G-ready smartphones designed for mission-critical communication. At the Paoli-Calmettes Institute, Ascom’s devices have significantly improved everyday working conditions in the hospital. They manage alerts by priority colour codes and intelligently send data to the nurses in charge. With the integration of a private 5G SA network, data communication will be further enhanced, offering higher reliability and no downtime, ensuring that essential information is readily available with minimal delay.

The primary focus of this collaboration is to test the compatibility of Ascom devices, renowned for their reliability in demanding healthcare environments, on Boldyn’s private network. Initial tests conducted in Boldyn’s lab have been successful, demonstrating the potential for seamless integration with the hospital’s existing infrastructure. Testing at the operational hospital, has further proven the networks’ capability in connecting all devices and personnel throughout OYS. Now both Boldyn’s private network and Ascom’s devices are ready for operating mutually in the hospital. This scalability ensures that OYS can adapt to evolving healthcare technology and fully leverage the potential of Private 5G technology to enable advanced applications.

“Collaborating with Boldyn on the Hola 5G Oulu project has unlocked exciting new possibilities for our Myco 4 device, expanding its use cases and reinforcing our position as the reliable solution of choice for demanding healthcare environments. The devices are not only a valuable communication tool but also essential support for the hospital’s various use cases. The robust performance of the network, combined with the consortium’s expertise, will undoubtedly contribute to our mission of transforming healthcare sustainably,” said Kari Narva, Country Manager, Ascom Oy.

“This collaborative lab testing marks an exciting opportunity to unlock the full potential of Private 5G SA networks in healthcare,” added Petri Parviainen, Head of Sales Public Sector, Private Network Europe, Boldyn. ” By integrating Ascom’s industry-leading healthcare communication devices with our advanced Private 5G SA network, we aim to push the boundaries of innovation and develop reliable communication solutions. Additionally, the integration of Ascom’s mobile devices with WICOAR’s AR smart glasses will enable even faster data access throughout the hospital. We are eager to extend our testing to more hospital environments to ensure these devices perform optimally on the network,” he continued.

The integration of Ascom and WICAOR’s devices powered by a seamless private 5G SA network, allows healthcare professionals to access critical information and collaborate remotely in real-time, all while keeping their hands free. Benefits include:

  • Enhanced communication: Improved latency and reduced handover delays ensure seamless communication between healthcare providers, even in challenging environments.
  • Increased efficiency: smart glasses provide instant wireless access to patient data and expert support, streamlining workflows and optimizing care delivery.
  • Improved patient safety: Real-time access to critical information and remote collaboration capabilities can help reduce medical errors and improve patient safety.

This collaboration between Boldyn and Ascom aligns with Hola 5G Oulu’s strategy to foster innovation in healthcare. By working together, stakeholders can unlock the full potential of 5G and emerging technologies to transform healthcare delivery. To showcase the capabilities of private 5G SA networks and explore further collaboration possibilities, Hola 5G Oulu is open to organising demo events featuring innovative solutions that can revolutionise patient care. Hola 5G Oulu invites technology providers to explore its real-world hospital private 5G SA network, whether to test solutions, collaborate on projects, or discuss the future of healthcare technology.
