The Health and Life Sci­ence sec­tor in Oulu fea­tures a con­stant flow of peo­ple and ideas that have been chang­ing the land­scape of health­care for decades. The city was recog­nised by the world’s most com­pre­hen­sive start­up ecosys­tem map, *Star­tup­Blink, as one of the top glob­al cities for healthtech. The num­ber of Health and Life Sci­ence com­pa­nies in Oulu is con­stant­ly grow­ing. These com­pa­nies devel­op solu­tions to answer the needs of health­care and to sup­port indi­vid­u­als in self-mon­i­tor­ing of their health con­di­tions. Togeth­er with oth­er stake­hold­ers, the com­pa­nies belong to the OuluHealth ecosys­tem and cre­ate a glob­al­ly recog­nised health tech­nol­o­gy hub. Research and edu­ca­tion­al organ­i­sa­tions such as the Uni­ver­si­ty of Oulu and the Oulu Uni­ver­si­ty of Applied Sci­ences as well as the city of Oulu and Oulu Uni­ver­si­ty Hos­pi­tal are at the heart of this com­mu­ni­ty of col­lab­o­ra­tors.

OuluHealth – the ecosys­tem that dri­ves inno­va­tion

OuluHealth is one of the lead­ing Health and Life Sci­ence ecosys­tems in the world that boasts world-class exper­tise in high tech­nolo­gies and a rep­u­ta­tion as a fore­run­ner in dig­i­tal health. It was estab­lished in 2012 to strength­en close coop­er­a­tion between acad­e­mia, researchers, social and health­care providers, com­pa­nies, the city of Oulu, and cit­i­zens. The ecosys­tem pro­vides a net­work of stake­hold­ers that strive to trans­form health­care on a glob­al scale and, as a result, improve people’s lives. OuluHealth’s main goals include facil­i­tat­ing the devel­op­ment of health inno­va­tions, boost­ing the healthtech busi­ness, and sup­port­ing the imple­men­ta­tion of bet­ter health­care ser­vices for the ben­e­fit of all cit­i­zens.

The ecosys­tem active­ly enhances oper­a­tions and seizes oppor­tu­ni­ties to join project con­sor­tia in Fin­land and beyond. The most impor­tant OuluHealth mile­stones include for exam­ple, con­tribut­ing to Oulu’s receiv­ing the full Four-Star Ref­er­ence Site Sta­tus from the Euro­pean Inno­va­tion Part­ner­ship in Active and Healthy Age­ing (EIP on AHA) and con­tribut­ing to many nation­al and inter­na­tion­al ini­tia­tives, such as the inDe­mand, AIC­CEL­ER­ATE, and MEDi­gi projects. These ini­tia­tives sup­port deliv­er­ing new solu­tions that improve patient care and mod­ernise med­ical and den­tistry edu­ca­tion in Fin­land.

In addi­tion, the ecosys­tem has devel­oped unique inno­va­tion test­ing and devel­op­ment envi­ron­ments, OuluHealth Labs, that stim­u­late research and sup­port health com­pa­nies in deliv­er­ing inno­va­tions to inter­na­tion­al mar­kets.

OuluHealth Labs at entre­pre­neurs’ aid

One of the great­est OuluHealth assets is OuluHealth Labs, a world-class inno­va­tion test­ing and devel­op­ment envi­ron­ment, which is open to com­pa­nies from Fin­land and beyond. Inno­va­tors can use the labs to devel­op their ideas, prod­ucts, or ser­vices under authen­tic con­di­tions and with gen­uine users. What makes OuluHealth Labs a per­fect envi­ron­ment for test­ing process­es is tech­nol­o­gy, health and social pro­fes­sion­als’ direct feed­back and open-mind­ed cit­i­zens ready to use new solu­tions. Inno­va­tions are test­ed through the entire ser­vice chain, from pri­vate homes all the way to health cen­ters and hos­pi­tals. OuluHealth Labs con­sist of four test­beds, each equipped with cut­ting-edge pilot facil­i­ties: the OYS Test­Lab, the Oamk Sim­Lab, the Pohde Well­be­ingLab and the Mit­t­lab.
