The Ecosystem of Healthcare & Advanced materials in Sendai – seminar

Are you interested in research and business opportunities in Japan? Join the seminar Today and Future of Sendai to learn more about the Ecosystem of Healthcare & Advanced materials in the City of Sendai.

Sendai is the largest city in the north-east of Japan. It is also one of Oulu’s strategic friendship cities. Sendai, is growing to be a robust platform for life science, such as medical, drug discovery, healthcare (IoT) products, and advanced materials in Japan. The city has been cooperating closely with Tohoku University, which ranks the third top university in Japan.

A key person from the City of Sendai, Mr. Yasufumi Shiraiwa, will be joining the seminar to present the ecosystem of healthcare & advanced materials. He will also provide valuable information about research and business opportunities in Japan as well as hints on entering the local market starting from Sendai.

The seminar is aimed at researchers and companies from the life science, healthcare IoT, advanced materials and cleantech (energy and food) industries as well as data analysts and data analysing companies.

Mr. Yasufumi Shiraiwa

Section Manager, Industry Promotion Section, Economic Bureau, City of Sendai

Mr Shiraiwa has 20-year-experience related to the Development Bank of Japan and as an auditor of investment in local development projects. He used to work for the Mayor’s secretary section in Sendai as a secretary and Mayor’s speech writer. For the past 9 years, he has been working in the Economic Bureau of the City of Sendai. Currently, he is involved in a strategic group for economic projects as one of the core persons in the City of Sendai.

Sendai in brief

Sendai, with a population of over 1 million inhabitants, is located in the Tohoku region, which has more than 400 years long history and is surrounded by green nature.  It is also the centre of economy in the region. Sendai was one of the cities damaged during the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Recently, the Japanese ministry decided that one of the world’s biggest synchrotron radiation facilities focusing on nano level soft X-ray synchrotron radiation will open in Tohoku University campus area in 2023. In addition, Philips has announced the launch of the first Japanese co-creation centre in Sendai in March 2019. Sendai was a perfect location as it is home to an innovation platform for life science and healthcare IoT. Philips signed the collaboration agreement with the City of Sendai and the research partner agreement with Tohoku University in June 2018.

Oulu and Sendai have been developing the co-incubation agreement since 2005.
